Barefoot in Blue for One Day Without Shoes

Saturday, March 31

I admire the concept behind Tom's shoes.  For every pair of shoes purchased, Tom's provides a pair of new shoes to a child in need.  In 2008, One Day Without Shoes was founded to "raise awareness of the millions of children at risk for disease and infection as they grow up without shoes."

Tom’s and Essie nail polish partnered up this year for One Day Without Shoes April 10, 2012.  This is the second year in a row Tom's and Essie have worked together on this initiative.  To raise awareness for the cause, Tom's and Essie had a sweepstakes on Facebook in early March.  Every day for 15 days, 1,000 people who signed up would receive a bottle of Essie nail polish in the limited edition color Barefoot in Blue.   Essie and TOMS gave away of 15,000 bottles of nail polish in all.

I was lucky enough to win a bottle of Barefoot in Blue.  I didn't know what it was I received until I opened the package.  Barefoot in Blue is a demure dusty blue.  My photos don't do it justice.  In daylight the color is bright and cheerful.  As I sit here and type this, the color leans towards a light cornflower blue, which I love.  Essie is one of my top 3 favorite nail polish brands.  They are 3Free, the quality of their polishes is superb, and the shade selection is out of this world.  This is definitely a great polish for a great cause.

I will certainly be wearing this color on my toes on April 10th.

FOTD & new foundation

Wednesday, March 28

When Phyrra, Genia, and I were at Ulta a few weeks ago, Genia told us about a great deal QVC was having on Tarte’s Amazonian Clay foundation.  The promotion was for two full size foundations plus a huge brush for $48.  One foundation at Sephora costs $38; QVC offers one foundation and a brush for $34.  Two foundations and a brush for $48 was a great deal!  Phyrra helped me match my shade at Ulta, and that night I decided to purchase the special.

When I received the foundations I eagerly tried it.  It is called a liquid foundation, but the consistency is more of a cream.  It is not at all thin and runny like a liquid.  I applied it with my hands all over my face and……I was not impressed. :(

My go to foundation is Chanel Vitalumier Aqua which matches me perfectly.  Tarte’s foundation was much too yellow for me and in reality didn’t look all that great.  Phyrra asked if I buffed it well into my skin.  I hadn’t, since I used my fingers to apply.  So I tried the foundation again today, making sure to use the brush, use less product, and buff it in really well.  The extra steps paid off and I’m happy with the results.

(I’m going to post these pictures but please overlook my hair! :P This is also my first post wearing my glasses, which I love and wear 95% of the time.)

I think next time I would wear shadow instead of the liner (which I hate, btw.)  I was also trying out the lipstick to see if it looked good on me.  That is still up for debate.

Do you have a favorite foundation?  Are you loyal to that foundation or do you like trying new ones?

Sunny Saturday FOTD & OOTD

Sunday, March 18

Saturday I met up with Phyrra, Ray, and Genia for a leisurely lunch at Mellow Mushroom and then for some shopping at Ulta and Sally’s.

Phyrra chose the Mellow Mushroom and she didn’t steer us wrong.  The food was great, the atmosphere laid back, and the company, as always, was superb.  Genia is another local beauty blogger that we came into contact with through Brittany of Clumps of Mascara.  She was unable to attend the last beauty blogger meet up, but for sure I know we will all be at the next.  We got along really well; I’m really glad I was able to meet and connect with such amazing ladies through our shared love of beauty.

Afterward, when we went shopping, I purchased a Real Techniques stippling brush and Butter London’s Trout Pout nail polish from the Butter London Spring collection.  I almost…almost purchased one of their new lippy in the color Snog.  I couldn’t justify the price at the time because I tried the tester and it was a bit sticky for my taste.  If I still want it when I get my next paycheck I will pick it up.  I showed self restraint and did not pick anything up at Sally’s…possibly because I had just purchased 3 colors from the Hunger Games collection earlier in the week. ;)

For my makeup and outfit I decided to keep it casual. Knowing it was St. Patrick’s day, and knowing I’m not Irish, I kept the green to a minimum.  It was also a warm day, so I wore shorts and a short sleeve top.  If it’s getting this warm already I am going to dread summer.  I’m just waiting for the water to warm up so I can hit the beach!

First Impressions–Influenster Love Voxbox

Friday, March 16

Last year I signed up for Influenster after seeing tweets in my timeline about a VoxBox. Intrigued, I checked out the Influenster website to find out more.

According to the website [Influenster is a] "community of trendsetters invited to share their lifestyles and show their influence to qualify for personalized product shipments, special rewards and exclusive deals from the brands they love. Members love testing the latest products, giving insightful feedback, and spreading the word on their favorite finds!"

Once you sign up you are eligible to earn badges for having things like a Twitter account, a blog, a pet, etc. You then can be selected to receive a VoxBox of items to try and review.

I was incredibly excited when I saw I was selected to receive the VoxBox.  It is called a Love VoxBox because it was Love themed.  It almost coincided with Valentine’s day, but everyone received their VoxBox after Valentine’s day passed.

lovevoxbox

The Love VoxBox included

  • Ghirardelli – gourmet milk chocolate
  • Gillette Venus & Olay – 5 blade razor
  • Kiss – nail dress nail decals
  • Truvia – sugar substitute
  • Stash – herbal tea sampler

My thoughts:

I was very happily surprised and impressed at the items inside the box. They were all generous or full sized samples from well established brands.

I am not what you would call a chocolate fan, but I would be if all chocolate was the superior quality of the Ghirardelli chocolate squares.  They are smooth and creamy and just melt in your mouth.  They are not bitter for having 32% cacao, and they do not leave an aftertaste in your mouth which is important to me.  There was a coupon for $1 off included as well.  I will definitely be picking up a bar of this.

I haven’t yet tried the Venus & Olay razor, but I’m excited to. My boyfriend uses a 5 blade razor and gets a smooth shave out of it.  I hope to have similar results.  The Gillette brand never fails to deliver.

I am waiting to use the Kiss nail strips.  The package brings 28 fashion strips.  This sounds like a great number to share.  I know there are some little ladies in my family who love all things beauty related.  My nieces are 5 and 8 and are constantly digging through my purse, asking for my make up, or asking me to paint their nails. I think they will be thrilled to try out these nail strips.

I have never tried the newer sugar substitutes that have come onto the market in the last few years, so I was interested in trying the Trivia. I must say I do like it!  I have been using one packet with my Costa Rican coffee and macchiato creamer.  I bought the macchiato creamer on a whim before discovering I don’t like macchiato, so I have been suffering through the bottle until I started using the Truvia.  It sweetens up the coffee just enough without becoming overly sugary.  This also came with a coupon that I will be using to buy more Truvia.

I saved the best for last – the Stash herbal tea sampler. The teas are caffeine free, so I prefer to drink them at night.  They help me wind down after a stressful day at work. I have found the Cinnamon Apple Chamomile especially tasty and perfect right before bed.  I’m glad for the sampler pack because it lets me try flavors I would otherwise never try on my own.  I have a few favorites I will be purchasing once I finish my sampler.

I’m excited Influenster gave me the opportunity to try all these new products.  They were all winners in my book, and I know I will continue to purchase some of these items after my samples run out.

Have you tried any of the items above?  What did you think of them?

Disclosure – I received the products mentioned above for free for review purposes. I get no additional benefits for talking about the product or company.  All opinions are my own.

NOTD–double galaxy nail fail?

Thursday, March 15

I love galaxy nails. I LOVE galaxy nails. On Wednesday I tried my hand at a galaxy manicure but wasn’t satisfied with the results.  I called them fails in the jpeg files, but maybe I am being too harsh.

For the first manicure I didn’t use a black base, and I think I used too much glitter.  For the second manicure I tried to incorporate a lighter color and not as much glitter.

What I used for the first galaxy nail look:

OPI – Yoga-ta Get This Blue
OPI - Ogre the Top Blue
Essie - Sexy Divide
Zoya - Jem
Ulta - After Party

galaxy

What I used in the second galaxy nail look:

Milani High Speed Fast Dry – Black Swift
OPI - Ogre the Top Blue
Sally Hansen High Definition nail color - 07 Three D
Butter London - Tart with a Heart

I think they are both cute, not necessarily a fail, but they don’t look very galaxy-ish to me.  Have you ever tried the galaxy nail look? What do you think of this type of manicure?

Central Florida Beauty Bloggers Meetup

Sunday, March 11

Last month, Phyrra kindly invited me to the Central Florida Blogger’s Meetup at Cafe Tutu Tango. The event took place in Orlando this past Saturday.

The restaurant setting was perfect for our group of highly energetic ladies. The restaurant was bright, spacious, and quirky. The walls were adorned with gorgeous art by local artists that you could purchase. The wait-staff was kind and accommodating and the food was pretty tasty. (I ordered the lobster mac n’ cheese and washed it down with a delicious margarita.)

I can’t describe how amazing the experience was!! I was very nervous walking in to the event because I’m not a well known or proficient blogger. I felt like I didn’t “deserve” to be there (and said as much in my introduction!) I know it sounds silly, and as it turns out, I was worried for nothing! I was among well known and newbie bloggers alike, and every single lady there was so sweet and supportive! It was so refreshing and exhilarating to see a group of women so supportive and encouraging of one another.

After we traded blog cards and ate, we shopped each other’s boxes of makeup and nail polish. There were also giveaways from our sponsors. Our sponsors deserve a huge thank you for their contributions to our event.  They really helped make the event even more special with their generosity. A big thank you to Avon (via Alyssa) Cult Nails, CVS Beauty, Milani Cosmetics, NYX Cosmetics, Overall Beauty, Pure Ice, Tarte Cosmetics, and Venomous Cosmetics! And while I’m at it, many thanks to Brittany who runs the blog Clumps of Mascara; she organized the entire event!

I received a humongous bag from Milani Cosmetics that included nail polish, lipgloss, eyeshadow, face powder, mascara, and more!  Below are photos I did remember to take: of my Milani goodies, swag from some awesome sponsors, and nail polishes from the swap (including Butter London’s Wallis!)

I was so excited to be at the meetup that I forgot to take pictures of everyone at the actual event. I’m going to link everyone below so you can check out their blogs and view the pictures! If I forgot to include you please let me know so I can add you to the list!  (Phyrra and Pamela's Closet have great pictures of me here and here, if that’s what you’re interested in, hehehe. ;D)

If you ever have the opportunity to go to a meetup I highly suggest you go.  You will have a great time meeting new people, making friends, networking, and just having a lot of fun with people who understand your passions and enjoy being in your company. :)

Affordable Walgreens haul

Wednesday, March 7

Do you ever have those moments where you want to go into a store, but you have no particular need for anything? You simply want to go to see what is new or on sale?  That’s how I felt today, so during my lunch hour I trekked over to my local Walgreens to check out what they had.  Luckily for me, I stumbled on their clearance rack and found several things I wanted to try.  I walked out with several items and a happy wallet.

haul1

haul2

First, for the non clearance items…I walked by the Revlon section and saw their items were buy 1 get 1 50% off.  I wasn’t going to buy anything but the Lip Butter display was so nice and neat, and had at least one of every color available. I couldn’t help but take a peek and bring two home with me, so, Tutti Fruitti and Red Velvet are now snuggled up with the rest of my lipsticks.  To be honest, I’m not impressed with the Lip Butter’s wear time, but I like being able to put one on and not need to moisturize separately before putting it on.  I like the easy grab and go nature of this product.  I also wanted a sheer orange/coral color and Tutti Fruitt fit the bill.  Red Velvet is a nice warm red that I can see myself using in the evening.  Both lip butters came out to $11.99

I don’t know if you follow any other youtubers.  One of my favorite youtubers is EmilyNoel83 of Beauty Broadcast.  In her recent Shopping List Ideas video she mentioned a new shampoo by Suave called Everlasting Sunshine.  The name alone was enough for me to go check it out.  A little backstory on me and shampoo: A few years ago my hair went from a thick and lush mane that grew like weeds to an oily and baby fine wisp that won’t grow, no matter what I try.  I do take Biotin and vitamins for my hair and nails, but no matter what shampoo I use, I don’t get great results.  I’ve tried indie shampoo bars, natural shampoo bars from whole food stores, and pricey shampoos from the mall.  In reality, it has been a while since I have used a drugstore shampoo, but I figure if nothing performs to my standards, why pay department store prices, or deal with long TAT?  Once I finish my current bottle of shampoo I’m going to give Everlasting Sunshine a whirl.

As for the scent…this is a really strange thing, but for me, it reminds me of the smell of a model apartment.  You know the model apartments that a complex will show prospective renters? They are pristine and filled with matching Ikea furniture and always have a pleasant demeanor to them.  That’s what this shampoo reminds me of.  I know, I’m strange :p  This was $1.99 each so I picked up a shampoo and conditioner for only $3.98

In the clearance section I found a mini GermX hand sanitizer for .49, a Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure nail polish in Yellow Kitty for $4.24 and a Yes To Carrots lip balm for .82.  These three items came out to $5.55.

Really, my splurge items were the Revlon lip butters.  I’m excited to try the Suave shampoo and the Yes to Carrots balm.  I tend to have a lot of lip balms and lip treatments, including my holy grail Shiseido lip conditioner, but for .82 I won’t cry if it melts in the sun or if I misplace it.

What is your favorite type of item to purchase from the drugstore?

Too early for spring: FOTD & OOTD

Sunday, March 4

Florida weather is such a fickle thing.  Earlier in the week I glistened every time I stepped outside.  Today, I woke up to very cold, windy weather.  I had a lunch date set with Phyrra and already had planned to wear a very spring-y dress, so I wasn’t going to let some cool weather stop me.

This is my first time trying the color blocking trend. Torrid did most of the work for me, with a gorgeous striped dress.  I tried to throw in a bright contrasting color in as well to make it more “me.”  I do think the yellow purse was a nice addition to the outfit.  Next time I will accessorize more.  My flaw with dressing to go out is that I never accessorize.  Between getting my hair and my face set, who can remember to throw on some jewelry?!  Not this girl.

Speaking of my face…I recently purchased Force of Love by MAC.  I didn’t think it would look right on me, but I purchased it anyway.  I got home and tried it on…and it didn’t look right on me, as I suspected.  Not wanting to return it, and determined to make it work, I tossed on a brighter lipglass and blotted the whole thing down to make it more wearable with my skin tone.  I think I succeeded, and am happy I got to keep the lipstick.  (I’m addicted to lipsticks right now >:)  Anyway, photos and details of my look below. :)
