Summer look

Sunday, July 31

I’ve noticed some people seem to be scared of bright colors, or stick solely with neutrals.  Well, not me!  I decided to break out my Cold Heart Sugarpill palette.  My make-up skills are rusty, so I chose to use only two colors, Tako and Afterparty and made them the centerpiece of my look.

I received at least a dozen compliments today between people at church and at the store afterwards.

Side note: These pictures were taken after I got home. My lipstick was gone because I did not reapply it.  I also cried (nothing terrible, I’m just sensitive :p) so my mascara ran a little because it wasn’t waterproof. But everything else stayed put!

I noticed my face routine is now MAC concealer, MAC Studio Fix, and Elf Hi-Definition powder, just because it’s quick and stays put pretty well even in the heat. The concealer even minimizes the freckles under my nose that I’m self-conscious about.

I’m super happy with how this came out and will definitely be wearing more bright colors this summer!  Do you wear bright colors year round, or do you tend to wear them more in the summer?

office look

Friday, July 29

If you follow me on twitter you have probably know that for my job, I telecommute.  I can’t express how much I LOVE working from home.  It is quiet so I get more accomplished, I get to spend more time with my dog, I can sleep in, I save on mileage, gas, food, the list goes on!

Unfortunately I don’t find many reasons to wear make up in the mornings.  My skin is combination – sensitive cheeks, super oily T-zone, and also prone to acne.  I try not to wear anything if I’m home with no intention to go out at all because of this.  We do still get called into the office for meetings though, so I fully take advantage of those opportunities to get gussied up for work!

We were called into the office on Wednesday to talk about changes in our department.  I wanted to wear something light but with coverage so I turned to my small MAC collection.  I was running late and did not have time to snap a before shot, but this is what I wore to the office and how it looked after around 11 hours of wear.  The only touch up I did throughout the day was for my lipstick.

Eyes:
MAC Paint pot - Painterly
Bokeh Face Cosmetics - Alps
Silk Naturals - Sweet Tea
Maybelline The Colossal Volum' Express - Glam Black
Avon Glimmersticks waterproof eye liner - Blackest Night

Brows
YBF Automatic Eyebrow Pencil - Universal Taupe

Face
MAC Prolongwear concealer - NW30
MAC Studio Fix - NC42
Elf - High definition powder

Cheeks
MAC Mineralize Skin Finish - Semi-Precious Pearl - outer color as highlight, inner color as blush

Lips
MAC lipstick - Gem of Roses

It is a subtle look, appropriate for work and I did get compliments on it.  Bokeh Face’s Alps is a great neutral brown on me with shimmer that makes sure it’s not mundane. Gem of Roses adds great dimension. I never thought I’d look good in a mid-tone pink but I find myself reaching for this color a lot!

Do you feel the need to change your look depending on your job, or can you wear anything you want?  What colors do you tend to go for?

Swatches - Linnaeus Cosmetics pt. 1

Saturday, July 23

My Linnaeus Cosmetics order came today!

LCGoodies1 LCGoodies2

Linnaeus Cosmetics are one of my top 5 favorite indie companies. I think Marin, the owner, has really set her company apart from many other indie companies. Her product branding is unique- from the name (named after Carl Linnaeus, father of binomial nomenclature) you can tell she puts a lot of thought and effort into her collections, descriptions, knowledge cosmetic ingredients, and her website. Her eye shadows have a great formulation- they are smooth, pigmented, sparkly, and easily blended. That’s not even mentioning her customer service! LC is miles apart from others in regards to customer service. Every time I’ve ordered from LC I’ve received a personalized note with my order. I can’t even begin to imagine how busy shop owners often are with making products, getting orders, packing + shipping and self-promoting. To know she’s taking the time out of her busy schedule to thank me shows me how much she cares for her customers and her company.

Unique concept + superior product + outstanding customer service =
Happy repeat customers.

But if you’ve ever ordered from Marin, you know this already. :)

Below is my current Linnaeus Cosmetics collection, which will be broken down and swatched in two posts. LCGoodies3

All eye shadows are swatched over bare skin, Urban Decay Primer Potion, Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk, Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy, and foiled with water so you can see what the different bases do to the finish of the shadows. For closer detail, click on the images.

LCSwatch1

Favorite swatches: Astute over the Jumbo eye pencil and Reef over Pixie Epoxy.

LCSwatch2

Favorite swtaches: Hope over bare skin (it has a nice warm depth to it) and Balancing Act over Pixie Epoxy.

LCSwatch3

Favorite swatches: Myth over UDPP (looks like my perfect new go to brown!) and Lanky over the Jumbo eye pencil.

LCSwatch4

Favorite swatches: Bouffant wet (it is practically blinding!) and Twiggy over the Jumbo eye pencil.

LCSwatch5

Favorite Swatches: Abberant over bare skin (since this is close to my skin tone it will work well as a highlighter or overall lid color) and Jounce over Nyx Jumbo eye pencil. Jounce was so difficult to swatch! It’s black, but I see it as a deep army green. I think you can see how black it is over Nyx the most.

I would say my favorite colors are Reef, Balancing Act, Myth, Twiggy, and Aberrant. Myth and Aberrant are great neutrals that I can see myself reaching for them again and again. Coraly-Pinks and Pinkish-Purples are close to my heart so Reef and Balancing are perfect for me. , and Twiggy is a nice light orange with a touch of gold on me which is great when I want something bright and unique but not too overpowering.

Do you see any eye shadow/primer combinations you like? What is your favorite Linnaeus Cosmetics eye shadow?

Thrifty Thursday: Lipstains

Thursday, July 21

I love wearing lipstains during the summer.  They give me color without feeling like I have anything on my lips, they’re buildable, I don’t need to re-apply, and best of all, I don’t have to worry about getting lipstick on my teeth!

I recently picked up a few items at my local drugstore this past weekend.  They seem to have BoGo sales on cosmetics every week and there were 3 items I really wanted (Revlon Super Lustrous lipgloss in Coral Reef, a Revlon eyelash curler, and Maybelline the falsies volum’ express mascara.)  I needed a 4th item so I randomly picked up  Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstain in Wink of Pink.  I like trying new things when I can get them on sale, but it was relatively inexpensive to start.

colorsensational

The product comes in 10 different shades and claims:

  • Sheer wash of color from water-based pigments
  • Fresh, barely-there feel from vitamin-enriched berry nectar
  • Natural, subtle color doesn’t feed into lines

Here are some on-the-lip swatches so you can see the color.  I was expecting a sheer wash of color and was surprised at how downright bright it was!

natural lip For reference here are my natural lips. As you can see they are somewhat pigmented, mostly the top lip and at the corners.  Sorry for the crazy crop!  I didn’t want to show my nostrils, haha.

color sensational 1 After 1 coat.

color sensational 2 After 2 coats

color sensational 3 After 3 coats!

To me this is much more than a “wink of pink.” Perhaps it’s my lips pigmentation but this was much more red on me.

I decided to try on another popular lipstain on the market – Stila’s Lip & Cheek Stain.  I hesitate to call this a comparison of the actual products; Stila’s stain is a glaze with a brush at the end while Maybeline’s looks like a fat felt tipped marker.  Stila’s product is also multi-use, although I’ve never used it on my cheeks because I’ve already used the brush on my lips.  Stila’s stain comes in 8 shades.  Here are some pics of Stila Lip & Cheek Stain in Cherry Crush:

stila 1 After 1 coat

stila 2 After 2 coats

stila 3 After 3 coats.

I would say Stila’s color looks more natural, but the color payoff is greater with Maybelline. Also, Stila’s lipstain takes longer to dry between coats and if you don’t use the brush carefully you can get brush strokes on your lip (see pic 1.)  I was also more aware of this being on my lips while with Maybelline I completely forgot I was wearing a bright red/pink lip.

Now for the price comparison!

The Stila cheek and lip stain has .08 fl oz / 2.4ml of product and is sold at Stila.com, Ulta, and Sephora’s websites for $24.00

Maybelline's lipstain varies per store:

  • $5.99 at Drugstore.com
  • $6.49 at Target
  • $5.50 at Walmart
  • $7.49 at CVS & Walgreens

This breaks down into the following price per ml.

  • Stila – $10/1ml at Ulta, Sephora, Stila.com
  • Maybelline
    • $1.83/ml at Walmart
    • $1.99/ml at Drugstore.com
    • $2.16/ml at Target
    • $2.49/ml at CVS & Walgreens

I like my Stila Lip & Cheek Stain but there is only 1 more color from the line I would pick up – Mango.  This is simply because Maybelline does not have a similar shade as of yet.  If I want to add another lipstain to my collection I’ll be visiting a drugstore or Walmart for Maybelline ColorSensational lipstain. Drugstores often have buy 1 get 1 1/2 off sales, which you can pair with manufacturers coupons to get an even steeper discount…win!

Have you tried either Stila or Maybelline’s lipstains?  Which do you prefer?  Are you a lipstick or lipgloss gal instead?

Lazy Sunday Look

Sunday, July 17

I try not to complain too much about Florida summers, because normally I'm too hot and tired to complain! ;) During the summer I really try not to wear foundation if I can help it because my pores clog easily and it leads to breakouts that can then scar due to my darker skin tone. I also like to go swimming often, so I don't want to spend too much time on my face if it will wash off in the pool. Today I knew I had to run a few errands so I quickly threw on some eyeshadow, blush, and lipgloss. My hair was soft and flowing this morning but by the second store, I gave up and tossed it up into a quick ponytail.

Eyes:

MAC paint pot - painterly up to the brow bone
Altered Ego Cosmetics - OCOEE swept lightly onto the lid
Linnaeus Cosmetics - Brigand patted onto the lid
Meow Cosmetics - Feliner in Catatonic placed in the inner corner
Covergirl - black eyeliner
Mabelline - The Falsies Volum' Express mascara in Very Black

Cheeks:
MAC blush - Hang Loose - light purple color on cheekbone as a highlight

Lips:
Revlon super lustrous lipgloss - Coral Reef

Thrifty Thursday

Thursday, July 7

Welcome to my first installment of Thrifty Thursday! As the name implies, I'll try to post my favorite bargain finds on Thursdays.

Today's post will be about Epielle Cleansing Wipes.

I have been using the Yes To Blueberries Brightening Facial Cleansing Towelettes to remove my make-up. I liked the pleasant scent and soft cloth, but found the price tag a little off putting at $7.99 for a 30 ct. pack. One night I found Noveau Cheap's review on Epielle Citrus Cleansing Tissues. I figured for $1.00, I couldn't go wrong trying these make up remover wipes. My local Big Lots is within walking distance, so I picked up a pack of the Green Tea cleansing tissues.

The cleansing tissues contain green tea, vitamin E, Aloe Vera and claim they are for all skin types, hypoallergenic, oil free, won't clog pores and moisturizes skin, and safe for contact lens wearers.

These are great! The Green Tea scent is floral and delicate but not overpowering. The cloths are soft. I have been using them for over a month and have not seen any irritation to my face at all, including around my sensitive cheek and under eye area. I find they remove make up a bit better than the Yes To cloths because they are more moist.

My local Big Lots only stocks Green Tea, but tonight I found another Big Lots that stocks Original, Green tea, Aloe Vera, and Cucumber. I also know there is a Citrus kind as well thanks to Noveau Cheap’s review. I picked up the Aloe Vera, Original, and Cucumber scents to try.

I compared all the scents of all four cleansing tissues and here is how they rate:

  1. 1. Aloe Vera – this scent is clean slightly floral. It is also just barely there. It’s completely non-offensive.
  2. 2. Green tea – I do love this scent, but I think it lost out to Aloe Vera because it’s slightly stronger and that gets boring to smell after a month of almost daily use. (I use these to wipe up looks, swatches, etc.)
  3. 3. Original – This smells simply like a make-up cleansing product. It’s neither floral nor fruity. Not offensive, but not the best compared to Green Tea or Aloe Vera.
  4. 4. Cucumber – My least favorite scent. I’m not a fan of cucumbers and this doesn’t smell like natural cucumbers. I’ve never tried Yes To cucumbers, so I don’t know how it would compare, but I’m sure if you like cucumbers enough to purchase from that Yes To line, you’d like this just fine.

I also did a price comparison to various brand’s cleansing wipes and broke it down to see the PPT, or price per towelette.

  • Boots No7 Quick-Thinking 4-in-1 Wipes 30 ct. $6.99
  • L’Oreal Revitalift Cleansing Towelettes 30 ct. $5.99
  • Yes To Cucumber Face Cleanser Towelettes – 30 ct. $5.99
  • Yes To Blueberries Brightening Facial Cleansing Towelettes – 30 ct. $7.99
  • Garnier Nutritioniste Nutri-Pure Detoxifying Wet Cleansing Towelettes, Oil Free – 25 Count $4.99

This breaks down into the following price per facial tissue.

  • Boots, L’Oreal, Yes To Cucumbers, Garnier - $.19 each
  • Yes to Blueberries - $.26 each
  • Epielle - $.03 each

Epielle cleansing tissues are the clear winner for me. They do their job exceptionally well; they do not cause a reaction to my sensitive skin, and are a great value for the cost. I hope you give them a try.

Have you tried Epielle cleansing wipes? Would you ever? What is your favorite cleanser? Leave your comments below. :)

here until i can think of a better place to go

Monday, July 4

Insomnia opens the door to a lot of crazy ideas that seemed okay at the time of inception. Starting a new blog is one of them for me. So, hello world!! Here I am, and here are a few goals I have for this space.
  1. Wardrobe Remix/Fatshionista outfit of the day posts - I've stopped posting OOTDs and need to pick up the habit again.
  2. Anything make up related. Boy I have fallen in love with beauty products again! I may post reviews, looks I wore to go somewhere, and products I love or hate.
  3. Physical Health/Mental Health/Fat acceptance - this one is DEEP. I don't know how much I will delve into this. Stay tuned.
  4. Anything else I can think of!
