Products I've used up! | May Empties

Friday, May 24

I loooove the whole concept of Products I've used up / empties videos. They highlight what people actually use, love/hate, would or would not repurchase. I feel that is much more valuable and honest information than just haul videos. Anybody can buy a lot of stuff, but when you use that stuff up is when you know you've essentially got a good product on your hands.

So here is my May empties video. It did take me a while longer than just May to finish up all of the products mentioned, but it would be too long to call it "so far this year's empties video." I like making videos although editing is not my favorite, and I kind of have the personality of a fish. But you know, that changes with time as you get used to the camera.

a simple thank you

If you're reading this, I just want to say thank you

Blogging has opened doors for me and given me opportunities I never knew were existed.  Aside from that, I have gained new friendships that mean so much to me. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit my little part of the internet. <3

Contouring, a cautionary tale

Thursday, May 16

I was never a girl who contoured her face.  I do like highlighting my cheekbones, but I know it's a dangerous slope because I have oily skin, and my cheeks tend to "glow" naturally.  My forehead also "glows" quite brightly, I might add.  I know contouring can add definition and structure to the face, but I wondered how that would play when you have a round face like mine.  Is contouring a face like mine possible?  Is it worth it?
Ever since I was on the panel for Senna Cosmetics at The Makeup Show in Orlando last year where they did a full demo on how to contour and highlight a face, I found that YES, you can contour a round face like mine, YES, it is possible, and YES, it can be worth it.

The owner of Senna Cosmetics asked me if I had Native American blood in me, because I had such high cheekbones and you can see where they naturally hollow out as well.  I do have native blood in me, but not Native American.  My father is Miskito.  The Miskito Indians are a Native American ethnic group in Central America...mostly from Honduras and from my birth country, Nicaragua.  I do get a lot of questions about "where I'm from." People most often tend to think I am Hawaiian or Filipino, but I digress.
My biggest hurdles when it came to contouring where those first questions: Can I contour a round face? Will it make a difference?  Once I realized the answer to those questions were Yes, my next problems were....where do I find a contour shade dark enough for me? And, how do I apply it without looking dirty or ruddy?

I have a Laura Geller Baked Cheek Dreams Highlighter and Blush in Neapolitan.  It has a shimmery highlight, a pink blush, and a darker color, a contour.  It is really one of the only contour colors I have, so I tried it out.
I can't say my first attempts at contouring were a success.  It might have been my application, or it might have been the combo. The contour shade was a little bit red/ruddy but to my (dis)credit, I think I pulled the contour too low.
I think I need to head back to the drawing board on this one. My first order of business is to find a contour powder that is dark enough for me, but that does not lean red/pink.

Do you contour your face when applying makeup? What are your favorite contour powders?

Nude Awakening

Tuesday, May 14

Wet N' Wild released two spring limited edition 8 pan palettes.  The second palette from the spring collection is called Nude Awakening.  I suspect it is Wet N' Wild's answer to the Urban Decay Naked palettes.

I have been SO GOOD by not using either palette until I blogged about them.  It has been really hard.  This palette has such beautiful shades in it. I am really eager to try it out.  I'll be going on a mini vacation soon and I think I may take this palette with me instead of both of my Urban Decay palettes.

I am most excited about the "Eyelid" shade on the left. I also think it is funny how the "Crease" shade on the right is upside down. :)

Which shade from this palette is your favorite?

Going in the Wild

Sunday, May 12

Wet N' Wild came out with two beautiful limited edition spring 8 pan palettes.  Unfortunately they were nowhere to be found in my vicinity, so I had a friend in a facebook group CP (custom purchase) them for me all the way from Washington State.

I have held off on blogging about them for weeks until I wrote a blog post about them.  Below are some pictures of one of the palettes called Going in the Wild.

Going in the Wild has a stunning mint eyelid shade that I am super excited to try out.  When I look at this palette, I just think of all the fun spring looks a makeup artist like Lisa Eldridge can create using them.  I cannot wait to see what I can conjure up with this palette.

Which shade is your favorite from this palette?

FOTD - Love Party

Monday, April 29

The Beauty Bloggers of Central Florida had a meetup....oh, over a month ago.  I'm just now getting around to posting my face of the day.  It was an intimate meetup. While we all microblogged (heading to twitter and instragram to catalog our day) none of us really took too many pictures. We were just happy and excited to be in each others' company.

Summer-like weather comes early in Florida, so I am already living for bright colors, hunty.
I watch too much RuPaul's Drag Race. What can I say? I'm a proud card carrying fruit fly. My favorite words from my friend John: "You're not a fag hag honey; you're a fruit fly!"

FTC updates and what that means for us

Sunday, March 17

A few days ago, the FTC posted updated guidelines on How To Make Effective Disclosures.  If you run a blog, you should read the PDF guide.  Carleen of Beauty & Fashion Tech blog wrote a great post breaking down the new guidelines and how they will affect bloggers.  Her post is located here.

What does this mean to you, the reader, and what does this mean for my blog?

I will now be disclosing at the beginning of my posts if a product was received for purposes of reviewing.  Further, I will also disclose when I purchased something with my own funds.

Honestly, these changes do not bother me.  I barely receive products to review, and I've always been honest about where my products come from.  I would wager that it is 90% me purchasing things and 10% receiving products for review.  Plus, the products I have received are through my blogging group. Trust me when I tell you, companies are not knocking at my door asking me to review their products.

Blogging is fun for me.  It is my break outside of my stressful work life.  It is something I do on my own time, with my own money, when time allows.  Blogging is not something I have ever, or will ever make money from.  I am not a big name blogger, and I probably never will be.  And that is totally ok with me.

I hesitated in writing this post because it will hardly affect me at all.  However, I want there to be full transparency on my blog and want my readers to know I plan to fully comply with the new FTC regulations.

Bye Bye Google Reader

Google announced that on July 1, 2013, they would retire Google Reader permanently.  I know I rely heavily on Google Reader to follow my favorite blogs, so I was scrambling trying to think of another format where I could read my favorite blogs.  I also needed something that could import my current reading list without me having to manually switch all my favorite blogs over.

Then I remembered about good 'ol Bloglovin'.  Bloglovin' now has an easy one step import button to move all of your blogs from Google Reader to Bloglovin'.  I did it and it only took a few minutes.

If you're losing Google Reader please follow me on Bloglovin': http://www.bloglovin.com/msjudixo

Are you on Bloglovin'? Let me know so I can follow you!

Dupe Alert! Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove

Sunday, March 10

There has been a lot of heated discussion about Sigma's latest offering, the Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove.  It retails for $39 plus shipping.  I found an affordable alternative to the textured silicone glove for less than half the cost of the original.  I made a youtube video about the dupe and included a demonstration of the dupe showing how it works as well as the Sigma version.

Let me know your thoughts on the Sigma Spa Brush Cleaning Glove and if you think my dupe is a viable alternative to the original! I'm curious to hear your thoughts. :-)

February Favorites!

Sunday, March 3

I recently decided to start a youtube channel!  I'm not really great at public speaking, and even though it's just myself and the camera, I feel as nervous as if I were standing in front of a crowd. It's scary and thrilling at the same time.

Currently I'm a total newbie in the filming and editing department, so please accept my apologies for the uneven lighting (the sun was peeking in and out the whole time.)  But, if you find socially awkward girls endearing, then my video is for you!

Below is my January/February favorites.  Let me know what your favorites for the month are! Please take a moment to subscribe to my YouTube channel, if you're so inclined. :-) http://www.youtube.com/user/msjudixo

Sample Sunday - back with a vengeance!

Sunday, February 24

Even though I haven't posted a Sample Sunday in a few weeks, I have been diligently working on using up all of my beauty samples. I have seven items total to share my thoughts on today.

 1. Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins mineral enriched renewal cream. - Put dullness to rest. Wake up radiant & refreshed. Now nature's famed night cream is newly fortified with a system of time-released resurfacers plus Vitamins C, E & H, minerals & moisture-rich replenishers. While relaxing aromas lull you to sleep, skin sloughs away dry, dead layers. Deletes dullness. 98% of those who tested it agreed - skin was renewed and refreshed in the AM. Helps the slumber deprived wake up on the bright side of the bed. So why face dull skin. Sleep it off tonight.

Ohhh man, where to start.  This bad boy was my favorite of all the products I tried.  As soon as I put it on I new I would like it.  I woke up with soft and fresh skin. I felt that with use, there would be visible improvement to my skin.  Not to mention, the scent is delicate and not overpowering. A full size is $39.50, which I balked at, at first. Compared to some other face creams I'm reviewing that's not too bad though.

 2. Lumene Vitamin C+ Bright Skin Radiance Nectar with Arctic Cloudberry - Vitamin C and Artic Cloudberry for radiant skin. It strengthens the fluid and micro circulation of the skin, it gently exfoliates wile taking care of the skin's optimal thickness, and minimizes the pores and makes the skin look smooth. The result is clear skin that glows with vitality!

Say Whaaaa? I did not feel or see anything that the product is claiming to do.  It didn't exfoliate, didn't minimize pores, and my skin didn't glow with vitality. The product felt a little sticky when you put it on which I did not like. I didn't see improved results to my skin.  At $21.99, it can stay at the store.

 3. Le Métier de Beauté replenishing daily solution SPF 30 - The emollient formula conditions and hydrates while it nourishes, rejuvenates and detoxifies skin. Replenishing Daily Solution with Syntoc Actif+ Moisture Rich Complex helps replenish the lipid barrier and normalize the skin's moisture content to provide suppleness to the epidermis.
  • Contains inherent anti-inflammatory properties and the superior ability to reduce redness
  • Lightweight, glides on easily
  • Moisturizes, conditions, and hydrates skin
  • Soothes and tones complexion
  • Vitamin E, Aloe, Sodium PCA and Sodium Hyaluronate offer skin deep hydration and softening

LMdB have a lot to say about this paraben free cream!  First off, the sample packet is generous. I got about a week's use from this sample, and I have a few more packets to left.  The reason it lasts so long is because you only need a small amount to use on your whole face.  I don't entirely agree that the formula is lightweight.  Yes, it glides on effortlessly, but, I feel it's a bit heavy, particularly for my oily skin. To compensate, I tried to use as little as possible so I wouldn't get a greasy face.  I don't have redness, so I can't speak to that claim, but supple is the perfect word to describe my skin when using this product.  It's $225, so I don't know that I would pick this up because it is a bit heavy for my face, but if you have dry skin it may be a perfect match for you.

 4. Chantecaille Flower Harmonizing Cream -
  • A complete moisturizing cream to nourish and cocoon skin against stress.
  • Essential Oils, Seaweed, Vitamins and Flowers reduce inflammation and promote collagen production.
  • Saccharides soften exceptionally dry skin and provide long-term moisturization.
  • Edelweiss flower, a powerful antioxidant, provides natural UVA/UVB protection.
  • 87% natural including a healing base of Pure Rosewater;
  • Vegan-friendly; Paraben-free
When you put this on, you definitely feel that you're putting a high quality cream on your face...but for me, it sort of stops there.  This cream is made more for people with dry skin, so I don't have much use for it.  It feels nice and leaves my skin feeling soft the next day. If you want a slightly less expensive and more natural alternative to LMdB's Daily Replenishing Solution, at $102, this may be it.

5. Jergens Daily Moisture Dry Skin Moisturizer with Silk Proteins and Citrus Extracts - For long lasting hydration, this moisturizer transforms dry, rough skin into smooth, visibly healthy skin. Enriched with moisturizing silk proteins and a citrus extract blend of lemon, grapefruit and pineapple juices, this formula leaves skin looking and feeling silky and smooth all day long. Dermatologist tested.

I wonk on a lot about how oily my face is, but as oily as my face gets, my legs are the opposite.  If I'm not careful my legs are anywhere from ashy to downright reptilian. Yuck! So, I was pleasantly surprised with this lotion. I usually use thick body butters that leave me feeling kind of greasy. This lotion moisturized my legs without the greasy feeling.  It's only $6.99 for 21oz so it's very affordable.  If I didn't already have too many lotions and body butters to use up, I would purchase this product.
6. Jurlique Purely White Skin Brightening Day Cream with VitaBrightKX - This lightweight cream features VitaBrightKX to help minimise the visible appearance of dark spots and discolourations and improve skin radiance. Rich in powerful natural botanical extracts to help protect against environmental aggressors, while aiding in overall skin wellness. Skin feels hydrated, protected with an even tone and texture.

Hm... I don't really feel anything for this day cream.  I mean, I wanted to like it because I tend to gravitate towards "skin brightening" creams, but, it didn't visibly brighten my skin and I remember it feeling a bit tacky on my face. Of course, I could only get one use out of the sample, so I can't say that my skin wouldn't improve with daily use.  Ultimately, I can't make a determination based on this sample.  A full size is $32 on Amazon, so it is a less expensive day cream than some of the others listed here.
7. Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes - Cleansing Facial Wipes refresh and nourish your skin plus remove waterproof mascara.
  • Added Vitamin - Pro-Vitamin B5 known to help restore, soften and smooth
  • No alcohol, no oil
  • Non Drying and no greasy residue
  • No dyes
  • No artificial perfume
  • No harsh irritants to upset skin
  • Dermatologist tested, Ophthalmologist tested
  • Safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers
  • Hypoallergenic and Non-comedogenic
These wipes are fan favorite and are often mentioned in youtube beauty videos. Honestly, I don't understand the hype.  They are better than other wipes I have tried (like the Yes To line) because they do not leave a greasy film on my face. They serve their purpose in that they clean my face and do not irritate my skin. However, I prefer a facial wipe that is more moist, and I feel my favorite $1 Epielle facial wipes outshine these $6.49 wipes any day of the week.  If you like a drier facial wipe you would like these.

As it turns out, I would pass on buying full sizes of most of the products I tried. Some just don't work for my skin type, and others I feel just, don't work at all.  I'm glad companies provide samples to their customers so we can try the product without investing money in a product that may not be a suitable match for our needs.  Have you tried any of the products mentioned? I'm curious to know if you'd every try any of the products!

Goose Creek candles

Monday, February 18

Not too long ago there was a Living Social deal for Goose Creek Candles.  I'd never heard of the candle company before, but I was certainly willing to try something different than Bath and Body Works, which are what my candle collection consists of.

The deal was for $12 for a cylinder candle.  The cylinder candles normally run for $24.99.  Shipping is an additional charge of $5.00.

Goose Creek describes their cylinder candles as follows: Try our new highly scented cylinder jar candles! We believe one scented candle should fill your entire home with fragrance. Goose Creek has been manufacturing highly fragrant products for over fifteen years. These delicious fragrances are here just in time for the cool weather. Enjoy pumpkin, apple, or hazelnut! These candles are sure to fill your entire home with your favorite festive aroma. Pick one up today!
Goose Creek has many scents, but not many available in the cylinder candle style.  I picked up the Sweet Honeysuckle scented candle.

Sweet Honeysuckle is described: Take a walk down the plantation drive just to pick some honeysuckle. The sweet aroma blows in the wind with honeysuckle, orange blossom, and white musk.

It smells lovely, very reminiscent of a small southern town filled with lots of oak trees and cobblestone roads. Sadly, you have to be nearly on top of the candle to get the scent.  It doesn't travel far, certainly doesn't "fill your entire home with fragrance."  My fiance couldn't even tell I was burning the candle when he was in the same room as the candle.  In comparison, I can burn a 3-wick Bath and Body Works candle in the kitchen that is at the back of the house, and smell it at the front door. I don't get that from the Goose Creek candle.

Another thing about the candle I was not impressed with is that it isn't a clean burn.  When I blew out the candle I had lots of black smoke billow from the wick.  I trim my wick every time I burn my candles because I know a shorter wick is a cleaner burn.

It doesn't matter how lovely the fragrance is if you can hardly smell it when you're burning the candle.  I also don't like how much smoke it creates when I blow it out.  Because of these reasons I do not think I will be purchasing from Goose Creek Candle Company again.

What is your favorite candle scent?  Mine is Cranberry Pear Bellini, a winter scent, by Bath and Body Works.  Do you own any candles by Goose Creek?  I have seen them making the rounds in Little Black Bag as an extra item, so that might be a good way to try the candle without purchasing one for full price, if you're still interested in trying them.

Nail of the day - Disciplined Skull and Glossbones

Friday, February 15

I came upon a superb nail polish combo I had to share. OPI Skull and Glossbones and Cult Nails Disciplined.

Skull and Glossbones is a delicate, sage-tinted grey that is without any shimmer.  Meanwhile, Cult Nails Disciplined is described as a sheer but buildable soft grey with purple, pink and blue shimmer.
They are a match made in heaven and the perfect palette cleanser after a week of wearing bright nail polish.

Valentine's Day Face of the day - Sweetheart

Thursday, February 14

Valentine's day is here! I'm not going to harp on it. Some people love it; some people hate it. Personally, I am indifferent to it.  I took today off with my fiance so we could spend some quality time together. He bought me my present (an outfit from Torrid), we had lunch, and now he's off watching the new Die Hard movie and I am trying not to overwhelm myself by thinking of how far behind I am on blog posts.  (Seriously, I have pictures for 8 posts, and 2 more I need to work on. *cry*)

This is what I looked like today.  I got compliments both at Torrid and the Brazilian Steakhouse so I consider the look a success! I used the Wet n Wild Shimmer the Night Away palette for the first time and ruined one of my nails in the process of opening it. My nails are so weak.  If anyone has recommendations on what I can use to strengthen it, please let me know!

Eyes
Two Face Shadow Insurance
Wet n Wild - Shimmer the Night Away palette
Senna Cosmetics - Brow Shaper Duo - Brunette

Face
Smashbox Photofinish primer
Urban Decay Naked Skin foundation shade 5.5
Chanel - Natural Finish Pressed Powder - 140 Muscade

Cheeks
MAC - Azalea Blossom
Wet n Wild - Fergie - Rose Champagne Glow

Lips
Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain - Sweetheart
Nyx - Megashine Lip Gloss - Gold Pink

And that was it! Did you wear anything special on Valentine's Day?
